It’s less than four weeks before my first ever race. I’m starting to get really excited about going. I’m nervous and also concerned about how much money the trip will tear into our finances, too.
On Friday I met up with the friend who initiated the entire event by asking me to join her for the HM while she’s down to do the full. She’s not been doing so good with injury and a lack of training because of a holiday break she feels she’s not ready for it at all. The deadline for switching to a different race length was the beginning of this months so all she can do is walk-run her distance.
While out for a run in the afternoon I thought about it again and realised I hadn’t even offered to give her a way out. I realised she might not go if it wasn’t for me. We’d planned to drive up in her car and stay in a hotel together, so it was a sort of a package deal, I guess. Still, I felt bad about that I never said to her, hey, it’s cool I can go by myself if you don’t want to go.
I sent her a text to let her know that I’m very happy to go by myself too. She said, she’d think about it over the weekend and so did I… I spent about 2 hours last night looking for alternate travel arrangements and possibly staying in a different hotel, too. And the more I did the happier I got to make it my personal little adventure, my first ever race!
I just got news though. The race organisers let her change from full to half. That’s Ireland for you. Thankfully ‘rules’ are really only general guidelines and most of the time you can ‘get’ what you want if you are prepared to ask.
So now I have a running buddy for my first ever race! I wonder how that will work out. We’ve never run together before, as a matter of fact, I’ve not really run with anybody before. I had just decided to run the run at my own pace, shutting out the people around me as much as I can. I guess I’ll have to do the same with her there, unless we maybe hook up together before hand and realise we are a good match regarding pace.
Interesting new developments
