earth – visiting soul

Sunday, October 31st, 2010

Today is Halloween and tonight we celebrate with lot’s of sweets and treats and scary stories. Did you know that Halloween probably came from the Celtic celebration of Samhain? In old days Samhain was the celebration of the night between the old and new year in the Celtic calendar. The veil between our world and the Otherworld of the dead is suppose to be thin on that night, so thin that spirits are able to pass over from beyond to visit on this night. That’s why we like to dress up in scary costumes to disguise ourselves from the nasty ones that might come calling.

I love all the mythology around Halloween and Samhain. And last year I took part in an art swap hosted by Kara aka Mother Henna and it was then I learned about Dia de los Muertos, the Central American celebration of life after death on the 1st and 2nd of November. And one of my very good online friends, Amy, told me about the symbolism attached to monarch butterflies. In the Americas they are said to be visiting souls. And I used the image of a monarch as my main theme for this years celebration. This year I hosted a small little art swap amongst a few friends I roped into another art project I’m working on at the moment.

And here is what I sent out to my friends:

visiting soul – modeling clay tile 2.5″ x 3.5″

As you might have read in my previous posts I’ve been struggling with the clay from the garden and in the end opted for the modeling clay to make sure my contributions to the swap arrive in time.
I decided to leave the tiles ghostly white, it works for me, I hope they like them like that, too. I used a wood block mould I made.

I also made a woodblock print of the same motif. I used the last pieces of hand made paper for this project and actually ran out. There are only two of these for that reason.

The second print I mounted on heavy paper to post away as a card with my submission. Here it is before I mounted it.

And since I’ve finally managed to dry out my clay I also made a print of the monarch. I still need to fire it.

visiting soul – earth ware

There you are. It’s not that I haven’t been busy with the earth theme, I just couldn’t post the bulk of my work because I didn’t want to spoil the swap surprise for my friends.

Happy Halloween to you all.
