31st of march – urban sketching in Berlin

Thursday, March 31st, 2011

I’ve been in Berlin for the past week and am thoroughly enjoying the hustle and bustle in contrast to the quiet countryside living we have at home. And the weather is warmer than on the best Irish summer days with plenty of warming rays. Everybody seems to enjoy the sunshine, the street cafe’s are busy and it can be hard to get a table outside.

.
I tried to draw a face the other night as an exercise because, well, they are really hard to do especially when your urban sketching, you can’t really take too long staring at some stranger at another table while sitting in a cafĂ©.

.
It was easier to sketch these two women through the closed windows while they were having a quick smoke outside. They were too quick, there must have been sharp drop in temperature outside after the day time heat because they didn’t stay long enough for me to finish. Sketching a night time scene was different, too so I had to add colour. Must try this again.

I’m not thrilled with any of these sketches but it was great fun doing them.
