29th of November – coated in white

November 29th, 2010 at 8:44

J came back from the shops two days ago with a canvas block. I had never heard of such a thing but was excited (he is just the sweetest husband!). I also got a new easel the other day. It’s rather beautiful, made from beech wood so I but the block up and started painting the view from my studio window. I haven’t done much painting that requires me to stand up, most of the things I paint are small and I tend to sit down while working. Painting standing has a very different feel to it, there is a different kind of swing to the brush.

Because of the snow outside the view is rather different at the moment and when you paint you really look at what you see. And I realized yet again there is no white out there even though we think there is! Just different shades of brown, blue, gray, orange, golden, yellow. I painted with acrylics and the one tube I used the most in this is the white, but never on it’s own.

This is obviously unfinished, just the beginning of a base layer. I hope the snow stays for a while. I do like painting what I see.
