29th of January – knitting and felting

January 29th, 2011 at 11:03

I’ve been doing a lot of knitting lately. I’ve mentioned it before, I blog about my knitting on the main blog on a regular basis usually on fridays. I’m away at the moment, and the city I’m staying in has some nice arts&crafts shops, I could spend hours and a fortune in them and I try not to. But I have discovered something irresistible, wool for felting. The idea is, you knit something, then felt it, by washing what you knitted in the washing machine. What usually happens by accident and then coincides with foul language and upset has turned into an eager awaited moment of surprise, coinciding with expressions of elation and joy. The instructions are rather vague and the only guidance in regards to sizes and anticipated change is that the garment will shrink by 30 to 40%.

So I knitted uber large, monstrous socks with cuffs and put an aaa-size battery for scale in this image.

Then I washed them at 40˚C in the washing machine and they came out like this.

I’m impressed. I like these felted indoor shoes – slippers.

I already have an order for another pair and a really good excuse to go back to that shop.

    Oh really lovely.

I’ve done that with bags. Much less precision required which suits my knitting skills.
