the practice of being creative everyday

21st of February – new ideas and new pots

February 21st, 2011 at 21:02

This year CED turns out to be a completely different kind of challenge for me. I have spent an entire year embracing my creativity, following the prompts and exploring new media and forms of expression. This year I feel challenged to keep up that raw energy I felt flowing when working on my art last year. So the challenge is not just to be creative everyday but to experience this second year on the creative road with a different kind of energy or fuel. I am beginning to accept the fact that not everything I do now has the same kind of momentum as last year when everything I did, tried, worked on was a fresh start. I move slower now, I feel more like a long distance runner, it’s not about getting anywhere sprinting but to move at a moderate pace and run, run, run and keep on running for how ever long I can with sustainable energy levels.
I am toying with the idea of starting a project each month, like a painting or a carving, something bigger, something that will take days and weeks to complete rather than hours. I think I will still be doing quick activities too, like creative sprints, pottery on the wheel, urban sketching. But there are other projects that have a different kind of pace and I want to look out for them, find them and engage. They are not really in the creative everyday bracket, the way I understood CED to work last year. Then again, it can still mean creative everyday on the same project as the day before, week, before, possibly month before.

Today I worked in my friends pottery again. I made three now pots working on the wheel. I also made no less than 34 trial tiles for all the glazes they have in their workshop to see how/if they work with my clay. Glazing is a clompletely different aspect of pottery and I find it somewhat overwhelming. The burning, firing, melting, chemical reactions, it’s all Greek to me, really. I’m at the gla-gla-gla-ab-ab-ab-ab ma-ma-ma-ma-bo-bo-bo stage, maybe one day with enough practice and trail and error I will speak glazing. But for now it’s just pottery made from my garden clay. I am getting better at this every time I try which in itself is exhilarating.

I love how you put that “speak glazing.” I know what you mean about the creative pace changing. I’ve found the same thing, as I’m in my second year of exploring creativity and really sticking with it over the long haul. There is the honeymoon energy, and then there is the settle-down-into-a-long-term-relationship energy. Two different things. Thanks for your post today.

I know what you mean about finding a different rythm and energy for this year CED. I feel it too.

The bowls are great! Good job and I look forward to the glazing.
