22nd of February – urban sketching

February 22nd, 2011 at 19:42

I don’t know about you, but whenever I tidy up my workspace I find stuff from way back when and can spend ours flicking through it. I am fascinated by my own work forgotten in a shoebox or old art folder. It seems it’s something like 10 years ago that I tried myself at watercolours first.

During my tidy-up I found this painting of a streetcar in Lisbon (2001) and I think it would fit in the bracket of urban sketching, well the setting/motif does anyway. But is it “urban sketching” in the truest sense if you (that is I) painted the painting from a photograph? Does urban sketching have to happen there and then??? – If so, I need to get out more :-P .
Lisboa -2001- watercolour 5″x7″ (15×17cm)

If painting from photos is allowed, then I would like to submit the painting I did today under that heading, urban sketching: the Forge Pub in Wicklow Town, Ireland, painted from a black&white photo card from 2007:

The Forge Pub – 8″x12″ (21×30cm)
We used to eat their pub grub lunches Irish style, things like stews, pies, pastas served from a bar food menu between 12:30 and 2:30 pm, yum, but the pub changed owners and that put an end to our very frequent lunchtime visits. But it’s a place of happy memories and possibly the reason why I bought the photo card some 5 years ago coincidentally around the time we moved away from Co. Wicklow, too.
