another footprint

January 15th, 2010 at 20:15

The stone carving is occupying much of my time, I’ve embarked on a slightly bigger project. keep your fingers crossed my tool wont give up with the hours I’m clocking up. I also did a couple of smaller pebbles. Here is one, front and back:

footprint / Kara – stone carvel in Irish beach pebble (aprox. 1.5″(4cm) across longest diameter)

The second photo is a better representation of the colour of the pebble, though the writing seems awfully harsh in the photograph.

This one is another gift, to Kara’s mum. I don’t think she follows this blog so I think I’m safe to post it.

What kind of tool do you use? A chisel? That is very cool. XO. I always thought deep in my soul I was a sculpture of rock, but I have never tried it. *sigh* I just feel very tactile and hammer-y some days.

I use a little drill tool, it comes with an assortment of drill bits which carve. It's not hammer and chissle, though you could and would use those if you were working on a big piece for sure. My pieces are tiny so I feel more like a dentist <- ok not a good joke, my advice to you, go for it! It's brilliant. The material itself (rock) is a piece of natural beauty and then when you carve something from it, it's a fantastic experience.

Go for it! I encourage you, if you're in anyway inclined, yes! It's amazing.

But don't underestimate the dust! You need to wear a mask.
