A moment ago I heard a chime of a bell ringing outside our front door. Not a big-ben type of bell, no, the sound of a tiny little silver bell, leaving a sparkling kind of sound, as clear as crystal, ringing through the house but ever so faint.

Hmm, I thought, what a sweet little sound… but I kept on doing what I was doing. I’m an adult and not that easily distracted.

And then there it was again. So I had to get up and go and look. It was the most wonderful little sound.
I went downstairs and opened the front door. And there standing on the lower step of out entry into the house stood a little purple bottle, and next to it, lying on the step as well, a blue envelope. I stepped outside and looked around. There was nobody there.

I looked down at the bottle and envelop and the picked them up. The bottle had a simple label on it which said in a very ornate sort of way two words: drink me.

I looked around again. And then, carrying both bottle and envelope I stepped inside the house and closed the front door to go and sit down at the kitchen table. I looked at bottle and envelope and wondered who this was for. Me?

There was no name on the envelope. Without much hesitation I opened it. I thought well, it could be for anybody, might as well be for me.

In it was a painting. I admired it for a moment and then turned it over and to my surprise there was a note written on the back. And here is what it said:

I invite you to come and stay in the house I built for you.
For you to come and see me, you need to go to the bottom of the garden where the old vegetable patch is at sunrise tomorrow morning. No earlier, no later. When you get there, drink the content of the bottle. I’ll pick you up and show you the way from there.

Best wishes M

And that was it. I just stared at the writing and then at the painting for a good bit longer, truly puzzled.
What should I do? Will I do as the letter says? Will I go down to the old vegetable patch at sunrise and drink the bottle?
