9th of November – new shapes

November 9th, 2010 at 15:14

I went to see my friend who has the kiln yesterday and came back with lots of ideas about how to finish my first couple of pieces. She uses mainly slip to finish the pottery pieces she fires. I didn’t know what slip is, so I might just explain it to everyone here. Slip is when you use watered down clay and pigments and mix them together to coat the pottery with before they go for their first firing. After the first firing the pieces then get coated with a transparent glaze and fired again.

So I cam back home with white and cobalt blue slip (the only two she had) and I shall be preparing some of my first couple of pieces accordingly. Stay tuned for an update on that.

I’ve also done two more mugs. I think it might be the right time to re-name the first mug. I think it’s more cup size. I’ve noticed while making the second one to go with the first one, they shrink when they dry. And that is quite considerably! I made the second one near enough exactly the same size, holding it up against the other one to match dimensions. The idea was to have two cups, after all drinking hot beverages tends to be a social event, or at least this way it can be…

But they are really quite different now that they are finished. There was a delay in the finishing because I actually manage to drop the second cup onto the floor. But it wasn’t badly damaged, I recon because it hadn’t dried out yet. So I repaired and put a new handle on it, today.

You’ve obviously spotted the third piece I made, this time a real mug! And it has done it’s shrinking and got a handle last night. Maybe I’ll get to play with the slip tonight. We’ll see.

The bigger size is a bigger challenge. The walls are a little bit more wobbly and knobbly. Practice makes perfect. But I’m happy with these pieces, they are fine and thin and relatively even considering I don’t have a wheel to turn them with but do all the shaping by hand.
