14th of November – favorite bird

November 14th, 2010 at 10:31

I think everybody has favorites. Favorites are often related to senses, like an olfactory experience or a particular flavour and there can be favorites when there are element of physical comfort, a favorite chair, favorite looks, a colour you choose to paint your walls in etc. I’ve seen these question lists on blogs, fb etc where people list their favorites on a variety of activities, locations, tastes, preferences on things like their favorite television show all the way to which day of the week they mark out as the best. If I ask you, what’s your favorite ice cream flavor you most likely be able to narrow it down to one or two. You certainly would be able to tell me which ones you don’t like and that in itself classifies others in the more favorable category.

Having said all that I think in a way to use the word favorite to mark out just one item, sense, experience is really quite difficult. Maybe if we would attempt to seek some kind of mutual agreement as to what we could call the ultimate favorite one, in relation to a specific group of others it would get easier, bit like in a multiple choice way. I do think a favorite is really a classification in relation to others of a particular group. So in that way it is really a word that marks out a preference as opposed to the ultimate.

So, when it comes to birds, if you were to ask me, what’s you favorite bird? I don’t think I can safely say a swallow. I really couldn’t. I like birds and I would find it hard to name a single one of them I don’t like. So in relation to my ramblings above when I attribute the word favorite in a moment, take it with a pinch of salt, will you?

masters of aerobatics – watercolour

This morning I did a watercolour painting of my favorite flying bird in my skies, the swallows. I love these aerobats. They are just spectacular, how they fly, chase, swerve, dive. I like flying myself and would love to learning how to fly. Every autumn and spring I search the skies for the swallows to see, have they left yet or respectively have they returned? In that way I think of swallows as little heralds of the change in the season. So I derive a particular kind of pleasure to see them go and then return.

I do have special kind of affinity for these masters of aerobatics.
If there is such a thing as re-incarnation I wouldn’t think it a bad choice to come back as a swallow. So I will be bold and say, swallows are one of my very favorite birds.

Lovely painting. And I agree choosing a favorite of anything is difficult. I love so many things that saying one things is my very favorite is hard be it a color or a bird. Swallows are awesome birds and are near the top of my favorite birds too though.

I have never seen live sparrows before, only in pictures or movies but you describe them so beautifully and painted them to match your description.
